SmartSite + AI

AI for the physical world.

A 3D planning product that lets construction teams lay out and agree on a complex site before anyone breaks ground — now with AI supporting safety planning and risk identification.

The problem

Complex physical operations were planned from drawings, assumptions and knowledge spread across different people's heads. Comparing two ways of doing something was hard, and there was no shared object to point at.

The result was that specialists and non-specialists could not easily agree on anything before work started — and the disagreements surfaced on site, where they are expensive.

What was built

A 3D site-planning product covering layouts, access routes, flows and temporary facilities, with scenario-based planning so two approaches can be put side by side and compared before either is committed to.

AI has since been brought into the workflow to support safety planning and surface risks before work begins — added to a way of working people already had, rather than replacing it.

The part that wasn't software

A product like this does not adopt itself. Alongside the build there was a structured adoption effort: training, and ambassadors inside the teams who could answer questions in their colleagues' own language.

That half of the work decided whether the other half mattered.

What carries over

  • Complex decisions get easier when everyone can see and move the same model
  • The product alone is rarely enough — adoption has to be designed too
  • Specialist knowledge becomes more useful when non-specialists can interact with it
  • Comparing scenarios moves decisions earlier, before mistakes get expensive
  • Adding AI to a workflow people already use beats replacing the workflow
